Abstract

This article focuses on a Danish educational documentary commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Fifth Thule Expedition (5TE), led by ethnographer and explorer Knud Rasmussen from 1921 to 1924. The 5TE was a major Arctic journey covering nearly 11,500 miles from Greenland to Siberia, aimed at documenting Inuit culture across Greenland, Northern Canada, Alaska, and Siberia, and collecting extensive ethnographic and archaeological materials now used by Inuit communities for cultural revitalization. The documentary, intended for Danish schoolchildren, incorporates archival footage, graphic stories by Greenlandic artist Konrad Nuka Godtfredsen, and contemporary Inuit perspectives, including those of Inupiaq lawyer Meghan Sigvanna Tapqaq. Produced through a collaboration of Danish cultural institutions and funded by several foundations, the film premiered in 2023 and is publicly accessible online with English subtitles.
