Abstract

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved eight new railway projects in India, with an estimated cost of Rs 24,657 crore. These projects aim to improve connectivity, mobility, efficiency, and service for the Indian Railways, aligning with the Prime Minister's vision of comprehensive development and employment opportunities. The projects will cover 14 districts in Odisha, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Telangana, and West Bengal, adding 900 km to the existing railway network and constructing 64 new stations. Additionally, the projects will connect the UNESCO World Heritage site, Ajanta Caves, to the railway network, benefiting tourism and facilitating the transportation of commodities such as agriculture products, fertilizers, coal, and iron ore. The capacity augmentation works are expected to result in an additional freight traffic of 143 MTPA and contribute to achieving climate goals by reducing logistics costs and lowering CO2 emissions.
