Abstract

The article focuses on Isata Dumbuya's efforts to improve maternal healthcare in Sierra Leone, particularly through her role as head of nursing and midwifery at the newly established Paul E. Farmer Maternal Center of Excellence in Kono. After returning from the U.K. where she worked as a midwife, Dumbuya confronted the high maternal mortality rates in Sierra Leone, which remain among the worst globally. She has been actively working to enhance training for healthcare staff, secure necessary supplies, and build trust within the community, including collaboration with traditional birth attendants. The new center, which includes the country's first neonatal intensive care unit, aims to provide better resources and care for mothers and infants. [Extracted from the article]
