Abstract
This article analyzes the content of 100 English-language news articles on genetically modified foods (GMFs) found via Google News, focusing on the extent and nature of information presented. It finds that only 26% of these articles originate from professional or government sources, with the majority addressing definitions and examples of GMFs, while topics such as labeling, economic impacts, and environmental effects receive less coverage. Identification of GMFs from food labels was significantly more common in non-professional sources. The study highlights a need for scientists, educators, and health experts to increase their presence in online news to provide balanced, evidence-based information on the risks and benefits of GMFs, supporting consumers in making informed choices.
