Abstract
This article focuses on internalized stigma among forensic psychiatric patients receiving treatment in a high-security forensic psychiatry hospital in Türkiye. The study of 164 participants found that lower educational attainment, unemployment, lower economic status, diagnosis of schizophrenia or psychosis, and higher levels of violence associated with the index offense were linked to increased internalized stigma, as measured by the Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness Scale (ISMI). Gender and marital status did not significantly affect stigma levels. The findings suggest that tailored psychosocial interventions addressing economic empowerment, vocational training, psychoeducation, and social support are important to reduce internalized stigma, improve treatment compliance, and support rehabilitation in forensic psychiatric settings.
