Abstract
The article focuses on the static equilibrium and optimal shape of arch bridges, demonstrating that when the deck load is uniformly distributed and the arch is properly shaped, the arch rib experiences pure compression without tensile or shear forces. It mathematically derives the optimal arch profile as a parabola using only basic algebra and trigonometry, avoiding infinitesimal calculus, and extends this approach to cable suspended bridges where the forces are tensile. The analysis clarifies that the unique parabolic shape arises from the assumption of zero localized torques at the arch ends, resolving a paradox about possible alternative shapes. This method provides a simplified yet rigorous framework for understanding the load-bearing mechanics of arch and suspension bridges.
