Abstract

This article focuses on a case study teaching methodology developed by Olha Tikhonova and Oresta Remeshylo-Rybchynska to engage architecture students in hybrid and fully online learning environments amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine. Using the fortified Pidhirtsi bastion castle in Ukraine as the central case, the method combines active student involvement through historical, urban, typomorphological, and compositional analyses with digital tools such as live streaming and interactive online seminars. Tested first during COVID-19 restrictions with a hybrid format and later adapted for wartime conditions with fully remote participation, the approach addresses challenges like limited internet access and psychological distress while fostering deep analytical skills and student motivation. The authors conclude that this case study method is effective for architectural education under crisis conditions and recommend its broader use in higher education, especially during emergencies such as martial law or natural disasters.
