Abstract
The disputes over whether Kali consumes sacrificed goat meat or is Vaishnava, and therefore vegetarian, are indicative of attempts to "clean up" Kali worship. In Moodie's analysis, the change of management system had a profound impact, shifting Kalighat from being a place where Kali exercises authority to one where a Hindu elite is in control. Moodie also explains how goddess worship in general, and worship of Kali in particular, is rooted in Bengali culture. [Extracted from the article]
