Abstract

This article examines yizker bikher, or memorial books, collaboratively written by Eastern European Jewish Holocaust survivors and pre-war emigrants to commemorate destroyed Jewish communities. Comprising over 1,000 volumes, these texts emphasize vibrant pre-war Jewish life, collective memory, and direct condemnation of German and Nazi perpetrators, while also expressing survivors' anger at global complicity and abandonment during the Holocaust. Although often overlooked by scholars due to their emotional tone and non-professional authorship, yizker bikher provide rich first-person accounts of shtetl life, Holocaust experiences, and postwar resettlement, serving as vital sources for understanding Jewish memory and history. The article highlights the importance of re-evaluating these memorial books as curated collective memory that challenges simplified narratives and offers nuanced insights into Jewish community life before, during, and after the Holocaust.
