Impact of Automated Writing Evaluation (AWE) on Middle School Students' Writing Outcomes.

Abstract
This article reports on the largest randomized controlled trial (RCT) to date examining the impact of MI Write, an automated writing evaluation (AWE) system developed by Measurement Incorporated, on argumentative writing outcomes among English-speaking middle school students from traditionally underserved groups, including Black, Hispanic/Latinx, and low-income populations. Over one school year, the study found no significant overall effects of MI Write on students' writing quality, self-efficacy, enjoyment of writing, or beliefs about writing as a recursive process. However, exploratory analyses revealed significant variation by district: one district with higher fidelity of implementation showed positive effects on writing quality and self-efficacy, another showed negative effects, and a third showed no impact. The study highlights that effective AWE integration depends heavily on contextual factors such as curricular alignment, teacher usage, and implementation fidelity, suggesting that AWE tools like MI Write may improve writing outcomes only when thoughtfully and consistently embedded within supportive instructional environments.
