Abstract

This article focuses on Kliph Nesteroff’s insights into the evolution and nature of American comedy, drawing from his experience as a former stand-up comedian and comedy historian. Nesteroff discusses comedy’s roots in marginalized communities, its cyclical trends, and the challenges of stand-up as an art form requiring both innate talent and extensive practice. He emphasizes that comedy’s primary purpose is to make people laugh, rather than to serve as a vehicle for political statements or social change, and critiques contemporary trends where comedians prioritize provocation or seriousness over humor. Nesteroff also addresses issues such as oversaturation in comedy, the impact of media platforms, and the distinction between comedic artifice and truth.
