Abstract

This article examines the transmedia history and cultural reception of Sherlock Holmes in Denmark from the late 19th century onward. It highlights how Holmes became popular not only through translated books but also via newspaper serials, theatre adaptations, early films by Nordisk Films Kompagni, and comics, notably those by Danish artist Robert Storm Pedersen. The article discusses shifts in Holmes’s image, including his role as a symbol of English resistance during World War II and the emergence of scholarly Sherlock Holmes societies in Denmark. It also addresses media panics around sensationalized Holmes stories in early 20th-century penny dreadfuls and the diverse audiences reached through various media formats over time.
