Abstract

In this article, Elizabeth Clark-Lewis takes us back before the founding of AAHGS in 1977. Speaking in part from an autobiographical perspective, the author speaks of the "unique delights and dilemmas" of early research efforts in African American family history, how the mini-series Roots raised the profile and viability of our research, and how early researchers blazed an autoch-thonous path to discover and document the lives of our ancestors and their communities.
