Abstract
The article examines the contrasting recognition of "gekiga," a genre of Japanese comics, in Japan and abroad, particularly focusing on the works of Tatsumi Yoshihiro. Despite Tatsumi's international acclaim, including awards for his autobiographical work *A Drifting Life*, he remains relatively unknown among contemporary manga readers in Japan. The article also discusses the scholarly interest in "gekiga," its evolution, and its stylistic characteristics, particularly through the lens of Saitō Takao, who established a distinctive linework style that resonated with readers. Ultimately, it highlights the ongoing relevance of "gekiga" in contemporary Japanese society, despite its perceived decline in popularity compared to other manga genres. [Extracted from the article]
