Abstract

The article focuses on the economic and trade significance of Greek pottery, particularly Athenian pottery, in the ancient Mediterranean, challenging earlier views that downplayed its economic role. It highlights case studies from the Archaic and Classical periods, especially in the western Mediterranean and Iberia, revealing complex trade networks where Greek and Phoenician exchanges were more interconnected than previously thought. Key findings include the sustained production of specific pottery styles driven by Iberian demand, evidence of shifting trade routes, and the sophisticated market knowledge of both producers and consumers. The study underscores pottery as a valuable indicator of ancient trade patterns and consumer preferences across diverse Mediterranean regions.
