Abstract

In the 7th century, a battle took place between England and Scotland that settled a border that still exists today. The battle occurred on May 20, 685, when King Ecgfrith of Northumbria led his warband to attack the holdings of King Bridei of the Picts. Ecgfrith's forces were overconfident and pursued the Picts into a trap, resulting in Ecgfrith's death and the end of Northumbria's northern expansion. The battle site is uncertain, but it is believed to be either Dunnichen in Angus or Dunachton in Badenoch. The Staffordshire Hoard revealed the wealth and craftsmanship of Anglo-Saxon weapons, including pattern-welded swords. [Extracted from the article]
