Abstract

In his book La cultura del Barroco , José Antonio Maravall argued that seventeenth-century culture was, to a great extent, a mass culture, characterized by the production of kitsch. In this article, I analyze the intellectual origins of such characterization in the debate about the nature of popular mass culture in the mid-twentieth century. I argue too that, exploring the reach of Maravall's thesis, we could substitute the term pop culture for kitsch culture, opening the way to a more productive analysis of cultural consumption in the seventeenth century, in line with what contemporary pop culture studies have proposed since the 1970s.
