Abstract
This article analyzes the film *Nous* by French-Senegalese filmmaker Alice Diop, focusing on its use of mise en scène and editing to explore the interplay between individual and collective identities within contemporary France. Through a blend of autobiographical elements, observational footage of racialized residents of Parisian banlieues, and contrasting scenes of White French life, Diop interrogates the complexities of belonging and exclusion, questioning who constitutes the "we" referenced in the film's title. The film employs an essayistic approach that moves beyond confessional autobiography to emphasize collective experience, highlighting symbolic and physical boundaries that shape social and cultural identities. By integrating personal archival material and first-person narration, Diop situates her own identity within broader diasporic and French contexts, offering a nuanced critique of citizenship, alterity, and the politics of representation in France today.
