Abstract

This article examines the development and significance of muralism in China during the 1930s and 1940s, highlighting its connections to the Mexican mural movement led by Diego Rivera. It details how Chinese artists, influenced by Rivera’s socially engaged and revolutionary style, adopted murals as a medium for political propaganda and social education amid national crises and the War of Resistance against Japanese invasion. The creation of the large-scale Yellow Crane Tower mural in Wuhan in 1938 exemplifies this trend, serving both as a patriotic symbol and a modern art project. The article also explores the cross-cultural exchanges involving Chinese, Mexican, Japanese, and Soviet artists, illustrating how wartime conditions shaped evolving artistic styles and the role of murals in public and political life in East Asia.
