Abstract

The article reviews Marina Abramović's solo retrospective at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the first woman to receive this honor in the institution's history. It traces Abramović's development from her early, politically charged performance Rhythm 0 (1974), where she exposed herself to audience interaction with potentially dangerous objects, to later works emphasizing individual transcendence and audience engagement. The exhibition features re-enactments by performers trained at the Marina Abramović Institute, raising questions about the authenticity and immediacy of restaged performance art. While Abramović's work emerged amid late-20th-century political upheavals and shares affinities with feminist and activist performance artists, she distances herself from feminism, focusing instead on personal experience and control within her art.
