Abstract

The article reflects on the legacy of the sitcom Cheers (1982–93) and its absence from a recent poll of Britain's favorite comedies. Topics include the show's origins, inspired by Fawlty Towers but reimagined as a Boston bar where flawed characters find connection; Ted Danson's nuanced portrayal of Sam Malone; and how Cheers' ensemble cast and writing captured themes of loneliness, hope, and the search for belonging within the confines of everyday life.
