Abstract

The article discusses the life and works of Scottish poet Maria Bell, who was previously unknown to many. Contrary to previous speculations, Bell was actually a member of the upper-middle class Bell family in Edinburgh, and not an autodidactic poet from a working-class background. Through careful analysis of her poems and historical records, it is revealed that Bell was the sister of Dr. Joseph A. Bell, who inspired Arthur Conan Doyle's character Sherlock Holmes. Bell's poems in "Songs of Two Homes" reflect on family deaths and ancestral ties, shedding light on her personal life and connections to the Bell and Craigie families. [Extracted from the article]
