Abstract

The article explores Indigenous materialism, which focuses on things and their relations, and the conflict over the ownership of Indigenous art and cultural objects. It examines the contrast between Germany's decision to return 22 Benin bronzes to Nigeria and the British Museum's refusal to do the same with the Benin bronzes in their possession. It discusses Indigenous aesthetics rejecting the notion that cultural objects belong in universal museums rather than their original communities.
