Abstract

The article analyzes Daniel Bryan’s WWE Championship reign from November 2018 to April 2019 as a case study to explore how WWE storylines communicate neoliberalism, colorblind ideology, and political subtexts within professional wrestling. Bryan’s heel persona embodied a villainous leftist critique of consumerism and capitalism, positioning progressive politics as antagonistic to WWE’s neoliberal sporting values, while his eventual defeat by African wrestler Kofi Kingston reinforced colorblind rhetoric and racial neoliberalism by framing Kingston’s success as individual merit overcoming abstract barriers. The study highlights how WWE appropriates contemporary social and racial issues, often commodifying and neutralizing them within scripted narratives that uphold dominant ideologies of meritocracy, masculinity, and racial hierarchy. It concludes that WWE’s storytelling reflects broader cultural tensions around politics, race, and neoliberalism in sports media, warranting ongoing critical examination.
