Abstract

The article focuses on Rachel Whiteread's recent solo exhibition at Luhring Augustine Tribeca, which presents a shift in her artistic practice toward themes of entropy, transformation, and memory. Whiteread transforms discarded materials such as flattened cardboard boxes, corrugated iron, and scrap paper into sculptures cast in precious metals or papier-mâché, highlighting the tension between presence and absence. Works like Untitled (Silver Pallet) (2021) and Untitled (Bulletin Board III) (2023) explore consumption, memory, and loss by rendering everyday objects and refuse into enduring, contemplative forms. The exhibition invites reflection on systems of consumption, environmental decay, and the passage of time through a material intelligence that bridges the visible and invisible.
