Abstract

The article explores how economic prosperity in the Netherlands during the 17th century facilitated the emergence of the Dutch Golden Age, a period marked by significant artistic achievement. The formation of the Dutch Republic in 1579, characterized by a decentralized economy based on trade and industry rather than hereditary wealth, allowed a wealthy middle class to flourish. This economic environment supported a vibrant art market where artists, such as Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and Judith Leyster, could sell directly to the public, leading to the popularity of genre paintings and still lifes that reflected everyday life. The article highlights the unique contributions of various artists and the cultural significance of their works within the context of Dutch society at the time. [Extracted from the article]
