Abstract

This article analyzes Swiss-German theatre maker Milo Rau's tenure as artistic director at the Belgian institution Nederlands Toneel Gent (NTG), focusing on his institutional dramaturgy, migratory aesthetics, and postmigrant theatre practices. It situates Rau's work within broader debates on reforming European public theatres—particularly contrasting the German Stadttheater model with Flemish city theatres—and highlights his efforts to diversify ensembles, engage communities, and address global sociopolitical issues through productions like *Orestes in Mosul* (2019) and *Antigone in the Amazon* (2023). While Rau's reforms reflect ongoing institutional shifts toward inclusion and mobility in theatre, the article notes critiques regarding the precarization of artists under neoliberal employment models and the limited structural changes behind the scenes, especially concerning racial and cultural diversity in staffing. Ultimately, Rau's legacy at NTG is characterized as a complex, partial transformation that builds on prior innovations in German and Flemish theatre but also reveals tensions in implementing truly inclusive and sustainable institutional change.
