Abstract

The exhibition *Signals: How Video Transformed the World*, held at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City from March to July 2023, explored the multifaceted impact of video technology on contemporary life through its political, cultural, and social dimensions. Curated by Stuart Comer and Michelle Kuo, the show traced three models of spectatorship developed by video artists since the 1960s: immersive participation, critical reflection on media and politics, and the elusiveness of visual apprehension. Featuring works from early video art pioneers to politically engaged collectives and contemporary artists, the exhibition highlighted video's dual role in enabling democratic expression and facilitating surveillance and control. It also emphasized video's ongoing influence in shaping identity, political discourse, and counter-narratives across diverse global contexts.
