Abstract
The aim of this paper is to compare the main ideas of José Antonio Maravall regarding the Baroque with the understanding of the same period by some Spanish-American materialist authors. In particular, it questions the argument of the cultural leadership of the absolutist nobility and the relative marginalization of the Indies as an object of study in La cultura del Barroco , his main work on the subject. In doing so, we aim to highlight the important social role that the plebeian social classes played in the emergence and consolidation of Baroque culture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
