Abstract
A recent study by astronomers at the Chinese National Astronomical Observatories claims that the Star Manual of Master Shi, a Chinese star catalog, is the oldest of its kind in the world, dating back nearly 2400 years. The study uses computational algorithms to analyze historical star coordinates and suggests that half of the star measurements in Shi's catalog date back to about 355 B.C.E. The debate over the catalog's age and accuracy reflects a larger historical context of scientific priority claims and cultural exchanges, with implications for understanding ancient Chinese astronomy and its global connections.
