Suzaku observation of an iron K-shell line in the spiral galaxy NGC 6946.

Abstract

This article focuses on the detection and analysis of an iron K-line emission at approximately 6.7 keV from the central region of the spiral galaxy NGC 6946 using archival data from the Suzaku X-ray Imaging Spectrometers (XIS). The iron K-line, indicative of a thin thermal plasma with a temperature of several keV, was detected at a 3.1σ significance level within a 2.5-arcminute radius, with an estimated luminosity of (2.3 ± 1.2) × 10³⁷ erg s⁻¹ at a distance of 5.5 Mpc. The study concludes that known stellar sources cannot fully account for this emission, suggesting that multiple supernovae and possibly additional heating mechanisms such as magnetic reconnection or stochastic particle acceleration contribute to the hot plasma producing the iron line. Due to limitations in spatial resolution and photon statistics, the precise origin of the iron K-line remains uncertain, warranting further high-resolution observations.
