Abstract

This study focuses on the use and cultural significance of wooden kitchen utensils in Artvin province, a region in northeastern Turkey known for its extensive forests and diverse ethnic heritage. Through semi-structured interviews with 28 long-term local residents knowledgeable about Artvin’s culinary culture, the research categorizes wooden utensils into five functional themes: storage, preparation, cooking, serving, and other uses. Participants emphasized health benefits, tradition, durability, aesthetics, and environmental friendliness as key reasons for preferring wooden products, which are primarily made from walnut and oak. Common wooden items include cutting boards, mixing spoons, spatulas, plates, trays, and storage containers, reflecting the integration of wooden utensils into Artvin’s culinary practices and cultural heritage. The study highlights the importance of preserving and promoting traditional wooden kitchen tools amid modern material alternatives.
