Abstract

The article discusses two documentaries: "First Orbit" and "Total Surveillance." "First Orbit" chronicles the historic spaceflight of Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin aboard Vostok 1, utilizing real-time imagery from the International Space Station and archival audio, including conversations between Gagarin and ground control, which has not been widely heard outside Russia. "Total Surveillance" explores the former headquarters of the GDR’s State Security, known as the Stasi, located in Dresden, where the preserved original rooms serve as a poignant reminder of the surveillance state until 1989, impacting visitors who tour the site.
