Abstract

This article focuses on the life and career of Jasper V. Wall (1942–2024), a prominent radio and optical astronomer and the final director of the Royal Greenwich Observatory (RGO). Wall made significant contributions to radio cosmology, including work on extragalactic source counts that challenged the steady-state universe model, and played a key role in establishing the La Palma Observatory. His career spanned positions in Australia, the UK, and Canada, where he was known for his research, leadership during the closure of the RGO, and mentorship in statistical astronomy. Wall also contributed to the Apollo missions' communications via the Parkes Telescope and authored a textbook on practical statistics for astronomers.
