Abstract
New research presented at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference suggests that Jupiter's moon Europa may not be as promising for life as previously thought. Two modeling studies indicate that Europa's rocky interior may be geologically dead, making it unlikely to foster conditions conducive to life. Other recent measurements and observations have also cast doubt on Europa's suitability for life, including lower levels of oxygen in the subsurface ocean and the absence of erupting plumes. While some scientists believe that past conditions on Europa may have been more favorable for life, the overall consensus is that the moon's ocean floor may not be able to sustain biology.
