Abstract
A new simulation suggests that there is a 50% chance that the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies will avoid a collision in the next 10 billion years. Previously, it was believed that a collision between the two galaxies was inevitable. However, the new study leaves room for the possibility of the galaxies escaping each other. The simulation takes into account the motion and mass of the galaxies in the Local Group, and suggests that the inclusion of smaller galaxies affects the probability of a collision. While the outcome is uncertain, it is likely that gravity will eventually cause all the galaxies in the Local Group to merge into a single giant elliptical galaxy. [Extracted from the article]
