Abstract
The article focuses on the Millennium Church Dio Padre Misericordioso in Rome, designed by American architect Richard Meier and completed in 2003 as part of the Catholic Church's "50 Chiese per Roma 2000" initiative to create architecturally significant churches in the city's periphery. It details the international competition that selected Meier's design over proposals by architects such as Tadao Ando, Frank O. Gehry, Santiago Calatrava, Peter Eisenman, and Günther Behnisch, emphasizing Meier's integration of classical Italian architectural traditions and local materials like travertine and Carrara marble into a modernist form symbolizing the Christian Trinity. The article also explores the church's urban and social context in the Tor Tre Teste neighborhood, the architectural dialogue between tradition and modernity, and the mixed reception of contemporary architecture in Rome, including critical perspectives on the church's role in expressing Roman identity and the Catholic Church's relationship to its architectural heritage.
