Abstract

A recent report from the Menninger Clinic in Houston, Texas explores the relationship between mood symptoms, nightmares, and difficulties in emotion regulation in psychiatric patients. The study found that patients with high levels of emotion regulation difficulties were more likely to experience nightmares in relation to depression and suicidal thoughts. However, emotion regulation difficulties did not moderate the relationship between anxiety and nightmares. The researchers suggest that these findings have clinical implications, highlighting the importance of building emotion regulation skills in the treatment of psychiatric patients. It is important to note that the study's sample was homogeneous, limiting the generalizability of the results, and that self-report measures may introduce bias into the data.
