Abstract
Franz Beckenbauer, a former German football player and coach, has passed away at the age of 78. Known as "Der Kaiser," Beckenbauer was considered one of the best players in the history of the sport and revolutionized the role of central defender. He captained the German national team to victory in the 1974 World Cup and coached the team to another title in 1990. Beckenbauer also played a key role in the success of Bayern Munich and led Germany's bid to host the 2006 World Cup.
