Abstract
Peter Singer, a pioneer in animal rights, discusses his book "Animal Liberation" and the progress made in the animal rights movement since its publication. He argues that similar beings deserve similar moral consideration, regardless of species, and that avoiding pain is a transcendent interest. Singer acknowledges the scale of animal suffering in factory farms and laboratories, but also highlights increasing support for animal welfare and rights. He discusses the scientific understanding of animal experiences and the ethical implications of animal experimentation, suggesting that while some may be justified for human benefits, minimizing animal suffering and considering all beings involved is important. Singer concludes that the continuation of animal suffering in farming reflects a bias towards our own interests and a lack of awareness. The text also explores varying attitudes towards animal suffering, differences in awareness and willingness to change between Europe and the United States, the question of whether animals experience pain comparable to humans, and the ethical considerations of consuming animals and plants. Overall, the text presents a nuanced perspective on animal suffering and advocates for expanding moral consideration towards all sentient beings. [Extracted from the article]
