The Legacy of Trailblazing Filmmaker: Alanis Obomsawin.

This article focuses on Alanis Obomsawin, a member of the Abenaki Nation and a pioneering Indigenous filmmaker at the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) since 1967. Over her five-decade career, Obomsawin has directed more than 65 films that document Indigenous Peoples’ histories and struggles, emphasizing education and authentic storytelling to counteract false narratives. The NFB recently released a 12-disc DVD box set, Alanis Obomsawin: A Legacy, curated by Obomsawin herself, featuring her films in multiple languages and including previously unreleased works aimed at supporting educational use.
