The Legacy of Trailblazing Filmmaker: Alanis Obomsawin.

Abstract

This article focuses on Alanis Obomsawin, a member of the Abenaki Nation and a pioneering Indigenous filmmaker at the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) since 1967. Over her five-decade career, Obomsawin has directed more than 65 films that document Indigenous Peoples’ histories and struggles, emphasizing education and authentic storytelling to counteract false narratives. The NFB recently released a 12-disc DVD box set, Alanis Obomsawin: A Legacy, curated by Obomsawin herself, featuring her films in multiple languages and including previously unreleased works aimed at supporting educational use. Obomsawin’s work highlights her lifelong commitment to Indigenous youth, cultural preservation, and social activism, inspiring new generations of Indigenous creatives.
