Abstract

This article reviews a recording of English string music featuring works by Vaughan Williams, Howells, Delius, and Elgar, performed by the Sinfonia of London under conductor John Wilson. The performances are praised for their clarity, precision, and emotional depth, notably highlighting the contrapuntal textures in Vaughan Williams' *Tallis Fantasia* and the elegiac mood in Howells' 1938 *Concerto for Strings*, a memorial tribute to Elgar and his son. The Delius piece is noted as a 1963 string quartet arrangement by Eric Fenby, and the Elgar *Introduction & Allegro* is described as vigorous yet introspective. The conductor's approach is said to reveal the intrinsic greatness of these compositions with both beauty and intensity.
