Abstract
Alberto Fujimori, the former president of Peru, has died at the age of 86. Fujimori served 19 years in prison for his involvement in killings by death squads but was released in 2017 and permanently in 2023. Despite his imprisonment, his family maintained a powerful political dynasty, with his daughter Keiko narrowly losing the presidency three times. Fujimori's presidency was marked by his defeat of Maoist terrorists, taming hyperinflation, and his authoritarian decision to shut down Congress and the judiciary in 1992. He also implemented drastic economic measures known as the Fujishock, which successfully stabilized Peru's economy. [Extracted from the article]
