Abstract

This article examines the emergence and creative context of the "Bedroom Producer," a music-maker who utilizes digital technologies such as digital audio workstations (DAWs) to produce music independently of traditional recording studios and commercial industry structures. Drawing on Csikszentmihalyi's systems model of creativity, it situates Bedroom Producers within a dynamic creative system involving the individual, the domain (musical, technical, and sociocultural knowledge), and the field (the social context that evaluates and integrates new work). The article highlights how Bedroom Producers acquire domain knowledge through informal, non-linear means, often via online communities, and discusses implications for popular music education (PME), advocating for curriculum designs that incorporate both domain knowledge and an understanding of the field's selection mechanisms. It introduces the Systems Centred Learning (SCL) model as a framework to support educators in fostering creativity that moves beyond individual expression toward work that is "original, valued and implemented."
