Abstract

This article examines Octavia Butler's "histofuturist" methodology—defined as a process that intertwines historical insight with speculative imagination—as a transformative framework for qualitative research through the lens of Sankofa, an Akan folktale symbolizing the value of cultural return. By analyzing Butler's immersive artful inquiry in her novel *Kindred*, the article highlights how her approach, rooted in personal experience, sensory engagement, and emotional depth, challenges Eurocentric research paradigms and advocates for Afrocentric methodologies that center Black cultural heritage and self-definition. Butler's method emphasizes returning to place, impressions, and emotion to create nuanced, empathetic understandings of Black histories and experiences, proposing that such artful inquiry can enrich qualitative research by fostering creativity, contextual complexity, and emotional resonance. The article ultimately calls for embracing Butler's techniques within Afrocentric frameworks to reclaim marginalized narratives and innovate qualitative inquiry.
