Abstract

This article focuses on Nicholas Vincent's comprehensive edition, *The Letters and Charters of Henry II*, which compiles 4,640 documents related to Henry II, including 3,039 letters and charters issued during his reign as king of England (1154–1189) and additional pre-accession documents. Vincent's work, developed over decades and building on earlier collections by Léopold Delisle and Élie Berger, provides detailed transcriptions, variant readings, and extensive contextual notes, offering an unprecedented resource for studying Henry II's written acts across his English and continental domains. The edition has significantly influenced Angevin studies by enabling new research into the political, administrative, and documentary practices of Henry's realms, while also raising important questions about the authenticity, production, and archival preservation of these documents. The forthcoming introductory volume is expected to address broader interpretive issues, including regional documentary cultures and the interaction between rulers and beneficiaries, further enhancing understanding of Henry II's governance and legacy.
