Abstract

This article focuses on the role and significance of Queen Elizabeth II's wardrobe as a form of uniform that visually communicated her identity and authority as the British monarch. It traces the evolution of her sartorial choices from childhood, influenced by designers like Norman Hartnell and Hardy Amies, to the later streamlined "rainbow" wardrobe co-designed with her personal dresser Angela Kelly. Elizabeth II's clothing functioned as a quasi-uniform, carefully crafted to embody the institution of the monarchy, reinforce national identity, and maintain public support through mediated images. The article also discusses how royal dress operates within strict social and political conventions, balancing tradition, visibility, and accessibility in a modern media landscape.
