Abstract

The essay is meticulously researched and an important reminder that Scotland did not change overnight when Alexander's younger brother, David I, became king. Alexander ("Sandy") Grant is one of the finest historians of medieval Scotland who has produced a string of important thought-provoking articles along with his I Independence and Nationhood i , which remains a standard text for late medieval Scotland. It is good to see a mix of both Scottish and English topics, given Grant's long and influential career teaching late medieval England at Lancaster University. [Extracted from the article]
