Abstract

This article investigates the learning processes of professional-level music producers in the United States through a multiple case study of three producers. It identifies four key themes in their learning: experimentation and matching (trial and error combined with critical listening), seeking out information (via reading, internet resources, and asking questions), learning through others (formal education, collaboration, and cultural immersion), and learning in context (on-the-job experience and performing). The study highlights the complementary roles of formal and informal learning in developing both declarative and procedural knowledge, suggesting that internships and collaborative opportunities during formal music production education could better prepare students for professional careers. Expanding music production education in K-12 and higher education settings may increase access and equity in this field.
