Abstract
She describes how Seale pointed her out and made an announcement: "There's Matilaba, the first female recruit of the Black Panther Party", he told the audience. "I just offered [Bobby Seale, cofounder of the Black Panther Party] some drawings I had for interpreting what was being said in the meetings", Lewis says of her role as an illustrator of the movement. Lewis's own artistic archive, coupled with her recollections of Party leadership, offers an important counter-narrative to the often male-dominated imagery of Black Power.
